For over 100 years, the area was quarried for blue stone or basalt, which was formed by volcanic action. The large bluestone boulders were crushed into smaller sizes and used in the construction of the local railway line and many local roads.

The Northern section of the quarry was donated to the former City of Berwick (now the City of Casey) by Mr. George Wilson, grandson of the original owners, for use as a Botanic Park. The other section of the quarry was later purchased by the former City of Berwick.

The quarrying left interesting landforms with large hills, sheer rock walls, two lakes and many trees.

Wilson Botanic Park is used by many groups of people, it is a beautiful park for those wanting a quiet stroll, an information park for those wanting to identify plants and see how they grow. It is an area where students can study botany, horticulture and related subjects.

A master plane was developed for the park and some of the proposed developments area North American forest, grassland areas, a collection of conifers and pinetum, and a rain forest with lakes and waterfalls. Emphasis will be placed on the preservation of rare and endangered species, threatened Australian habitats and local gene pools.

Since the commencement of the park development, two exciting finds have been made of fossil leaves and pollens. Further study has shown that the site contains the earliest dated eucalyptus in the world and that tropical rainforest existed here 20million years ago. Some petrified wood has also been found.

Many of the trees have been planted and sponsored by members of the public. Private and corporate sponsors have assisted greatly in the development of facilities. A "Friends of the Wilson Botanic Park" group has been formed to enable interested members of the public to become involved, working in conjunction with the City of Casey. The friends staff the reception desk on weekends, public holidays and Wednesdays. They attend regular working b's and have undertaken a history of the park.
